Michael Stoop is a Wellington-based guitarist, composer, and teacher. He co-founded Wellington Music Lessons in 2012, and he has been teaching guitar to students of all ages, levels, and styles ever since. Michael majored in Classical Guitar Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, and completed his Bachelor of Music in 2012. While at university, Michael studied guitar with Matthew Marshall and Dr. Jane Curry, and composition with Gao Ping. He was selected to perform in many master classes with international artists such as Miguel Trapaga, Fabriccio Mattos, Duo Saxe, Maria Isabel Siewers, Guilherme Vincens, Ricardo Gallen, John Griffiths, Alex Tsiboulski, and Alieksy Vianna. Prior to university, Michael played guitar in rock bands, jazz bands, and even a metal band.
Michael has performed in many different concerts and events throughout New Zealand, and he continues to perform regularly. In recent years, Michael has dedicated a lot of time to composing new music for the guitar. In January 2019, Michael started collaborating with Riddell Productions, a Wellington-based production company. They have since filmed and produced many videos of Michael playing his original compositions for guitar. In December 2018, Michael competed in the New Zealand International Classical Guitar Competition. He won the award for Best Performance of a New Zealand Work, playing his own composition ‘Resurrecting the Dream’.
